Default Getting Melted Plastic off Pipes

Hey I was just coming back from the store and had two plastic grocery bags under the cargo net... well one slipped down as I was on the highway and mleted on my hot exhust pipe. I tried scrubbing it with soap and water and a hard brush and then a wire brush but to no avail. I had two thoughts: terpentine OR heating the pipes back up and trying to scrape it off then but don't really want to scratch up the pipes.

THANKS! -Justin

Try a heat gun. Use increasingly more abrasive measures, starting out with 0000 steel wool. If you need more "grit" move on up the food chain. Heat gun should soften the plastic to the point of removing big glob/non-suface goo. If stainless, you're good to go. If chrome, be careful...

ug! That is why I kept my mouth shut. Any abrasives on chrome is normally a bad thing.

Thanks for the suggestions. I ended up getting it off with some ordinary degreaser and a plastic putty knife a little bit to try to avoid scratching it. And then tried the degreaser with a wire brush and that didn't quite do it either. So, I tried some chrome polish/cleaner and the wire brush and that didn't quite do it.

The solution: A sharpe metal blade and lots of orange clean (degreaser) and then to clean up the few scratches I got on her, I used the chrome polish and it looked pretty good.
