Welcome to the forums.
That's a tuff one without actually seeing the bike, etc.... They do make a dye that goes in the cooling system and uses ultraviolet light to detect a small leak that's hard to see with the eye. Have you checked all clamps, connections, etc?

First off, you gotta look for it!!!
Coolant leaves a residue when it drys, so, look for green stains.
Coolant fill is under the tank, and can be reached by taking the speedo off the tank (that bottom allen screw holds it on). You may have a bad fill cap. But if that's so, the coolant would be on the front cylinder head.
Check the hoses going to the coolant bottle (located behind the left chrome cover behind the engine). sometimes they'll come off or have a crack, allowing coolant to leak.
Also, god forbid, if there's no coolant in the system, what you smell is the pressure build-up seeping off. The cooling system will build up pressure like a car does when it overheats, then the pressure is pushed to the overflow bottle (which is empty) and escapes thru the bottles overfill tube.
