I have a 1988 Vulcan 1500a. I just started it up again after sitting for about a year and a half and it was running pretty lean, backfiring on deceleration. So I decided to give the carbs a good cleaning. Yanked them out and cleaned them all nice and then put them back in. However now it runs so rediculously rich you can't even ride it. If you give it any throttle at all then it blows out a little puff of black smoke and then dies. I think the problem may be that I am putting the needles in the wrong way. I put them on top of the little orange plastic thing instead of underneath. Is this correct?

If the orange thing you speak of is the part number 16007, then yes as the diagram shows, it should go underneath. Thats a great diagram to have when breaking down carbs, so I'd save it on your computer for future reference

 

Thanks for the diagram. That was definitely the problem. I switched them around and after a little fiddiling it runs awesome. Thanks again.
