86 zx9 ninja fork problem
hey folks newbie here i just got my hands on a 1986 zx9 ninja and it needs some work. The forks are air assisted and have that anti dive unit. they will not hold any air and it seems the springs are worn out. I was wondering if it would be more practical to rebuild or swap to something without the anti dive feature and if so any ideas on what will fit?

Welcome Bike Bandit has the fiche, and shows new forks at over 1300.00. I would look into having them rebuilt. Race Tech is one company that has a good rep. Let us know what you decide

Forks
Google Franks maintanence and engineering if you need fork tubes. Brand new for an '86 ZX600R were about $280. Fork seals can be had anywhere for about $15 (dennis kirk), Progressive suspension can supply new springs that can be better than stock in handling, (dennis kirk, competition accessories, etc). The air assist collars at the top of the forks on mine needed a new o-ring to keep the air in the forks. I got the o-ring from work but you can check a good hardware store, bikebandit.com, or McMaster-Carr (industrial supplies).
I used new 10W oil filled per the shop manual. Tear down of the fork required me to make a special tool to hold the inner damping tube so I could remove the allen bolt at the bottom-outside. I used a large nut (can't remember the size) welded to a length of electrical conduit.
