Default '84 Ninja starting problem.. Plz help

I recently bought an '84 Ninja that is in pretty good condition with under 10k miles. It runs well, but exhaust smells like gas to a moderate degree. Up until today I had no problem getting it running until just a few minutes ago. It wouldn't do anything when I pushed the start button...not even a click..totally out. Then I messed with the gearlever and rolled it back and forth (who knows?). Then she started right up. I found that if I don't let her warm up to completion, it will stall very easily when engaging the clutch. I must have started it 20 times the other day due to this phenomenon. Now the battery is very weak and almost will not turn the engine over. What pisses me off is that the headlight won't turn off when I keep trying to get her started, which continues to drain the battery. Argh! Can anyone suggest what I should do next? Thanks if so,

Kurt

With a fully charged battery and the clutch pulled in, does it turn over then?

Welcome to the forums.

Hi Dragone,

Thanks for the welcome. Yes, I did clutch in when starting. It is turning over now, but won't start. I bought a couple manuals on this bike and I came to the conclusion that it needs a charge probably from starting so much (and the danged headlight being on constantly). Is there anyway to turn the headlight off temporarily to not drain the battery? Thanks again

Kurt

Just unplug the headlight from the molex connector at the lamp.

Dragone-

Bought a battery charger and voila! Runs great!

One thing I noticed was a little acid corrosion on the screws/nuts on the floor of the battery box. There is definitely some acid residue down there. Should I squirt some water/baking soda down there to arrest the acid attack? Any suggestions?

Thanks

Kurt
