Back again, I have been having trouble getting my replies to post, so here goes again. Finally found the problem. All the intake valves were sharp as a razor. the exhaust's weren't far behind either. The head was flat, so that's a bonus. I'm going to try and price a used head vs a set of valves and a valve job next week. Sure wish I would've checked them first before pulling the cylinder block off. Oh well. Any advice on which way to go would be greatly appreciated. Jared

According to my friend who's also a machinest who took them apart said that's mostly likely caused by an intake leak, but he said it could possibly be caused by a seriously clogged air filter. Another guy at their shop said those bikes had issues with their chain tensioners, which I guess could lag the timing which may cause a misfire/backfire out the intake, but this one seemed fine. I suppose we'll put a new one in, just in case. I don't know how an intake leak could even exist with the carbs in a bank like that. I'm planning on going through them again just to make sure. Otherwise, i'm just going to do my best to reassemble it like it's supposed to be and check out as much stuff as I can along the way to make sure it works good for a long time.

Got an update. I was able to buy a used head and cylinder bank from a local off a supposedly running bike/(smashed)for a very fair price, haven't picked them up yet, but hopefully I'll have it together in the near future. Did anyone come up with any other ideas on the reason for the sharpening of the intake valves? And, should I replace the chain tensioner or let it be? Thanks

What is the CCT? Is that the chain tensioner? It automatically resets if you remove it and install it correctly, right? Your best guess would be thatthe previous owner didn't check the valves often enough? I thought it may have been caused by a combination of being run hot and the Hines pipe that's on it along with general beating. Is there any way to check the tensioner before I reinstall it?

answer: Most valves tend to suck up with a lack of clearance and timing checks. But the CCT is always readjusted after these checks.
