Default 1984 ZX900R Restoration

Hey everyone, newbie to this forum...but not motorcycles

I came across a 1984 ZX900R for free...not a bad deal. This bike really lives out the words "Basket Case" as you'll see in the photo's. I couldn't help but sit there in with a beer and a smile on my face and think I am in way over my head. Having never touched one of these bikes and the PO graciously dissassembled the bike and most of the motor. I have two motors, one I was told threw a rod...I know which one that is by the huge chunk missing from the lower case where the #3 let go, but I was told the tranny was good. The second motor I was told that the top half was good, but somewhere in the smoke of a burnout third gear pulled a Houdini. I've dissassembled motors before, but never put them back together, let alone piece together the equivalent to a 1000 piece garage sale puzzle.

I am hoping to get some help with putting the motors back together with your help and bike bandits reference microfiche.

Also, I can't and pictures of the same model with a middle fairing like mine with the opening on the side rather than the front...can anyone help me out?

Cheers!

No Doubt, I think there is a big learning curve ahead. i do have some questions if anyone is willing to entertain me...

My objective is to get this bike complete and back together by the end of February. I plan on riding the bike, working out all the bugs, and enjoying it before I break it down for a more thorough restoration possibly next winter.

1. Retrieving Bike Bandit diagrams. It's too bad they don't have a diagram of the motor bolting to the frame. I also found that some diagrams have the same reference number but they are different bolts. They also use the reference number and a letter attached to it. I am assuming that they are the same style of bolt, but different thread pitch, length, and diameter. Does anyone have a parts list and matching Microfiche or a good source to get it? What I am forced to do right now is compare hardware from the two motors which are in two stages of being disassembled.

2. The second motor still has the front sprocket nut on it, this is the one with supposedly the best transmission. I think I may have to put this motor back in the bike (I am still searching for all the hardware), put the chain on, put it in gear (if I can) and use the back break to get the nut off. If someone knows a better way to fix the sprocket so I can get some torque on the nut please advise away....

3. The internal components of the motor, specifically the gears, shifter drum and associated parts have light surface rust on them, does anyone have a suggestion for keeping them rust free? Will a coat of PB blaster suffice or should I take a little steel wool to them?

I will be in much better shape when I am able to make sense of the hardware and know what I need to get. I "new" complete used motor is sounding really good right now, or a parts bike. But who ever wants to take the highway when you can tear up the twisties.

Cheers

Here is my Bikepics area, I will be posting pictures up there periodically.

I was able to find this, which is a little more help than bike bandit as far as piecing together some of the hardware.

Well back to getting dirty, I am absolutely puzzled by trying to find out what is wrong with the gears. he said he dropped 3rd gear, which dog does that refer to, maybe I just need to replace the dogs....To be Cont...

Cheers

Has anyone seen this style of middle fairing on vintage Ninja's, I can't seem to find it. The darker picture is mine, the better looking picture is what I see on all the ZX900R and the GPZ900R's.

lol, I am here learning with you. I have no opinions on the fairing question. Youaquired the factory service manual for this ride yet? Good tolerance checks are normally listed.

I was able to find out where the middle fairings are from. They were an Early Aftermarket piece for them. They were made by Lockhart. I think they may be discontinued. I have only found one other bike in pictures that has this type of fairing, so they are fairly rare these days.

I have a haynes manual on the way now, so hopefully it will aid in putting the bike back together.

I haven't made any significant progress today, I am still trying to measure bolts and match them up to the part schematics from Kawasaki.com.

I also found a transmission on e-bay that I will probably buy, because it will be a nightmare trying first get the tranny out of the motor with the bad top end. I'd have to put the motor in the bike, just to get front sprocket nut loose. Not to mention trying to determine which are the actual motor mount bolts.

Welcome to KF! The best bikes are the ones which come in boxes. You know every nut and bolt, and what can go wrong.
Keep us posted with progress and pics!

Yeah, I have a fascination with basketcases...especially when they are free or dang near free. It's just no fund if you can't tinker, or customize. I am trying to be as diligent as possible with reporting when I have any progress. I'd be willing to pay a couple bucks for a list of bolts with pitch, length, and diameter. I might have to put somthing together to make a little money....it would pay for a weekend motorcycle trip.

alright, back to it.

Also for some reason...even though I have posted pictures before, when I try to use the click here to upload link, it doesn't attach a picture, even when I have the embed picture in post checked...I lost my picture magic.

Cheers
