Default 00 Prairie 400 4X4 - backfiring and not idling

What all is involved in a tune up on the Prairies? I bought this one from a friend and it has not been ridden much, only 40 hours on it. Runs decent, does not idle and backfires on deceleration.....any ideas? Thanks

Well, the reason it backfires is the idle jet in the carb is clogged. Now if you cleaned the carb already, and didn't take the jets out, it's still clogged (the holes are VERY small). that's the most obvious problem on a "stock" machine. Now, if there has been any mods done, then the damaged is caused by the mods. The only reason to modify is to run harder, which is fine if you constantly maintain the machine. But if you think of it as a car, and don't address the problems til it's too late, then "it's too late". there may be ring or valve damage which is repairable, but a bit more intensive & extensive.

Hope this helps...let me know...
FYI: a bike is like a woman, the more attention it gets, the better it rides!!!
