Default Should i go for it?

my friend told me today that if i wanted to i could by his bike from him for 2000 dollars. it is a 2002 cbr 600 with about 9000 miles on it. it was in a wreck and was built back up to stock . i would have to let it sit in the garage until i move out to license and insure it. but my parents kinda said that i could get my license so next spring i will be going to a msf course and then possibly taking that bike to "just get my license" but something is better than nothing. I thought it was rare to come across a bike that nice for that cheap. tell me what you think. should i drop the cash or save up for an 08 250r when i finally do move out?

hmm, only you have witnessed the rebuild of the cbr. So maybe the frame is straight. $2k is not bad for a buy. Then again, the ride will sit for a few months waiting for you to get licensed. A tough call. A sitting toy is useless and can cause some mechanics a fuss in getting it restarted and running again if not winterized. I am leaning towards the 600 anyways. Although the 08 250 is new and is close to the same price. What are your riding preferences?

I'd go with the CBR... You can always sell it later.

And should we assume said friend is the one who wrecked it? I think I have more questions about your friend than about the bike. Is this guy credible?

If it runs and the frame is straight its worth the 2k the only question is will you be able to let it sit in the garage for months calling to you and not ride it? as for the 250 you will be getting a much more tame bike (meaning easier to learn on while also an enjoyable ride, many experianced riders turn to the 250 just because its a fun bike), it will be brand new, under warranty if anything goes wrong and you dont have to worry about previous damage. Also it is capable of nearly doubling the gas milage of the honduh.
I would say if you are comfortable with your own ability to fix the problems that will arise with the CBR, go for it, but if you arent mechanically inclined then a smaller newer more fuel efficient bike can be just as much fun if not more than the CBR, without all the headaches of fixing other peoples mistakes.

yeah the friend that told me was not very informed but i talked with the guy who rebuilt the engine. it is a 1998 honda f3 model and has around 17000 miles 9000 since rebuild. It needs the vavles to be adjusted which is routine around 15000 miles so that will be around 200 dollars. It also has a cracked front fairing and some other minor cosmetics. Besides that it has a full yoshimura exhaust and he said in all mechanical truth it will run another 5000 miles pretty easy. Im leaning on getting this bike. The person who wants to sell it to me is kind of a middle man he bought it from the guy who wrecked it and rebuilt it, and he wasn't mechanically inclined. Im really worried that if i were to buy the 250 i might outgrow it. i don't know im just rambling now. I want a bike but i don't want to rush into anything ill regret doing.

well i guess it comes down to this.... are you a speed freak throtle geek.... or just wanna have some fun on a bike and not have to sink a ton of money into it later....
I'd go with the 250. Its fast enough to have a ton of fun on and it wont be over powering for a new rider.

just my thoughts...

The later info changed a lot from the initial. I would say that even if the motor was "rebuilt", they probably didn't replace the parts that would be wearing out at about the 20k mile mark. This may warrant another rebuild soon to change certain parts of the transmission or something close to it. Even with that info in mind, I'd probably still take that 600 if you can get a title in your name and it seems to ride well. It would be much more entertaining.

If Kawasaki had lived up to the initial 08's estimates of 46 horsepower, I might have said something else.Thisdecision alsobasically boils down to how long you really want this particular purchase to last.
