Rebuilding a 82 GPZ550
So my dad has a gpz550 that has been sitting for ~20 years. My first question: would it be worth rebuilding the bike or just buy one that runs? and second What am I looking at money wise?
I have been researching prices and such so far I have come up with this: Exhaust: $90 - $150 (depending on if I get keker(spelling?) or OEM) Tires: 200 Chain: $60 Gasket set: $90 Wheel bearings: $20 Carb rebuild kit: $100 Frame power coat: ??? engine rebuild (honing, and other things): ??? engine power coat: ??? Any help would be great. |

I might just have to fly by the seat of my pants lol. I want to try and just get it running first and see what it needs after that.

RE: Rebuilding a 82 GPZ550
Getting it to run first is a good point. Replacing rubber items, tires, lines, fork seals are normally in the 1st stage as well. Have fun.

Bike Bandit carries fiches back to then. Will give you an idea on what you may want.

RE: Rebuilding a 82 GPZ550
Depending on what it needs I would rebuild. Clogged carbs, rusted tank etc not a big deal. Will take a little work but you'll have a unique bike[sm=gears.gif]

RE: Rebuilding a 82 GPZ550
What about cleaning out the gas tank of rust and such? The bike has sat outside for years before going into storage.

RE: Rebuilding a 82 GPZ550
What I would do is get some nuts, you know, like nuts and bolts. Like 10 of them would work. Make sure you count how many you put in. Pour in some rubbing alcohol and slosh the nuts around. After a few minutes pour our the alcohol. contune to do this until the alcohol comes out clear. The nuts will knock the rust off. The alcohol will dry quickly once your done. I would then put an inline fuel filter in just in case[sm=smiley20.gif]
