Default How do you properly store a bike?

What do you do when you are goin to be gone or can't ride for a while...like say for 40+ days - like when u put the bike away for winter persay? I'll be gone out of the country for 40 days and I have no idea what to do to the bike before I leave.

Can you please describe IN DETAIL what you do to properly store the bike? I'm not about to mess this up. I will use your procedures for winter storage too I think.

Thanks,
Chinh

use some stabil or gas treatment and a battery tender, have someone start it if possible, do a oil change before you ride it again, talk nice to it and cover it up, plug the exhaust. dont worry about it to much

drain the gas out of the tank, and then start it let it idle to drain all the gas from the line, get a moto plug for the exhaust, or a wad of rags, leave some dryer sheets around the bike, yes dryer sheets, it will help keep away bugs and small critters, yes it works, if you can get a bike bag or just wrap her up in a sheet,

take the plugs out and put about 2 cc's of two stroke oil in the cylenders then tearn the motor over to coat the cylender walls and it prevents the rings from sticking. then takea fewspray paint lids put mothballs in them then place around the bike. the rodents wont go near them.

so i was reading what you guys said about storing bikes... im planning on storing mine in my girlfriends parents garage... (no where good at the apt. in the winter in maine) and i had a couple questions...
how common is it for the rings to stick to the cylinder?? how bad??
why is it good to plug the exhaust??
should i still cover it if its inside??

I've asked a friend of mine about flooding cylinders with oil, it's a routine thing that you do in any engine if you're putting a car/bike away for longer, so I'd go ahead and do it. It's also good idea to keep the garage dry or at least well ventilated - some guy I know bought a relatively new bike and put it away in his garage for 3 years (why I have no idea). He covered it with plastic. When he finally decided it was time to take it out for a spin around the block he uncovered it and found it totally rusted, I mean every nut and bolt. Ouch.

As for plugging exhaust - no idea, maybe so that bugs and little rodents cant get inside and eat your valves away?

yeah, plugging the exhaust is just to keep the bugs out of it and squirrels from hiding their nuts in it and to keep and water from condensing in it.

yep, only need a spoonful of pretty much any heavy weight oil (notspray lube unless its wd-40)
ATF (automatic transmission fluid) works really well to keep it lubes and is really good at preventing rust. WD-40 actually has been one of the best rust inhibitors made for decades, and with that little stray it comes with you can spray all around the perrimeter of the piston.
