Can you tell if the noise is coming from the upper, or lower part of the engine? This may make all the difference in determining the problem at hand.

That's the worst kind of engine noise.[

] If it's a loud knocking sound like you said, then lemac's assumption is probably accurate. You may be looking at a rebuild.
