Default Blah..bike died on the way to work 2891 miles

Blah, my bike died on me on the way to work and is at the dealer.

Bike was cutting out and losing fuel and bogging for about 1/2 mile, then died and wouldn't restart. It wouldn't do anything but crank. I tried using reserve as well and no dice. I filled up about 40 miles ago. She only has 2891 miles so maybe it is under warranty as it hasn't been a year yet. That is what the dealer mentioned so we will see. I told him I have a Leo Vince slip on and a +4 ignition advancer.

Update...

Now they have to run tests and commented that the ignition advancer might be the cause and the motor may be locked up. Of course that would void the warranty and i might be out 2 grand for a motor.

I gave them the ok to run the tests and all, but I can't see how an ignition advancer could lock the motor up. We will see.

I remember having a Vance & Hines Powerpak on my 9. The thing would run great for a few days, then just be totally dead. I'd swap out the Ppk back to the stock box, and I was good to go. I sent the Ppk to V&H for "repair" (they said it was fine) and put it back in the bike. Same damn thing happened. They make a nice paper weight......

I'd be su****ious of the "locked-up" statement. VERIFY before approving any mechanical work, and keep all replaced parts from a repair (on any vehicle.)
Keep us posted.

So far they have not looked at it and just gave me some speculation. I told them if it was locked up, why would it still crank for me when you try to start it? Plus it was sputter for about 1/2 mile as if it was starving for fuel. I still say it is a fuel related issue. I think he was trying to prepare me for the worst, but working in a dealership service dept myself(Subaru) I am aware of the possibilities.

I will keep you posted.

Yes. Even though I disagree with how the GM approached me and handled my situation commented on my mods voiding warranty, engine being locked up from it, me having to pay over 2K for an engine when they had yet to bring the bike into the shop let alone diagnose it.
I work in the automotive service industry and that is a no-no, you diagnose it first, then talk about what outcomes can be done once you have the diagnosis. I could have easily told them, no do not fix it, I will take it elsewhere and get another opinion. The find out it was a fuel pump, they would have lost me as a customer. I am happy with the outcome. I should have the bike back by Saturday.

Basically, an ignition advancer invalidates the warranty. Better to warn you in advance and **** you off than wait until they've half stripped the motor to tell you that even the work they've done up to that point isn't covered.

I'd have thought that working in the car service industry you'd be aware of that.

Over advancing the ignition, btw, can cause enough overheating to seize the motor, or more likely will burn a hole through the piston crown. If it was cranking it obviously wasn't seized, and a holed piston would usually let the motor start, but it would be very low on power and make a lot of smoke.

As the problem was the fuel pump your mods didn't affect the warranty, this time, but this kind of mod is best avoided until the end of the warranty period.

I already knew that regarding mods and warranty and understand that.

The approach, and wording was wrong and frankly it should have gone along the lines of...
"We have to perform some diagnostics on your vehicle to determine what is wrong with it and what has failed and to see if warranty will cover it. This will cost X amount of dollars if what we find is not covered by warranty and you declined to fix Would you like for us to do this?

Instead, he told me.... sounds like the motor is locked up and my mods could cause it and they would need to do some more diagnosis to verify the damage which I ok'd. They never looked at the bike yet until 3 hours later. That is my issue I have with them.

No smoke, no loss of power except bogging and no fuel/throttle response for 1/2 mile. I have ran this advancer on other bikes for well over 20,000 mile without a single issue. Many many people have been running these parts on bikes for years as well and as long as they are installed correctly and the advancer doesn't break, advancing it 4 degrees will not do that kind of damage if any.
