So What.
I'd been riding for 2 years off road and 10 years on road - about 150,000 miles - when I trained as an instructor. I thought training in instruction techniques was all the course was about. I actually (and nearly all the other trainee instructors) spent more than half of the course learning how to ride properly and why most of what we thought we knew was wrong.
Bottom line - don't listen to cousins or friends.

if you cousin is pushing you to move up to a 600 then he doesn't know enough about riding.
running in the high RPM is good these bikes were built for that. Hell on my 600 I exceed all legal speed limits in 1st gear. it takes a lot of fun out of the bike only being able legally wind out 1 of 6 gears.
