I started out on a briggs and Stanton 2.5hp minibike. That thing was a beast, on a good day it would top 20 mph. Don't know how I ever lived through the thrills of daredeviling on that ride. You could go 10 miles on a full tank then your walking. Oh the memories! No one is going to top the danger in that ride.............safety gear, never heard of it back then.

I think it is good to ride a 250 cc in the MSF class, and a Ninja 250 or 300 can be good for those who want to start on a sportbike, but for most people in the U.S. at least I believe that a 650 like the Vulcan S (or Suzuki Savage/S40) would also be a decent choice to deliver enough power for highway speeds.

The very first motorcycle I ever rode was the Suzuki TU250X in my MSF classes. It was great! After completing the class and getting my license, I went out and bought an '07 Ninja 250 and I love it. For now, it has plenty of power for a noob like me, and I'm building on my skills every time I ride it. It's very intuitive and forgiving, which is great for learning. I'm 6' 4" and 190 lbs and the bike fits me well, and I don't really care how I look on it.

If you're worried about what other people think or how you look on any specific motorcycle, maybe you should reconsider your priorities. Just my opinion.
