Engine cut out
Hey guys, hoping someone can help me
I've owned an 09 er6n for about a year and never had an issue, it's just been used for commuting mainly so daily trips of about 20 miles
However I recently took her for a 100+ mile trip which took about 3 hours, I got to my destination without any problems
The next day I started her up with no problem and let her idle for a little to warm up before I set out, I left and got about 10 minutes
down the road and the engine completely cut out whilst I was riding with the throttle open, I pulled over and tried to restart but the engine just kept
turning over without starting, I waited for 10 minutes or so and tried again and it started so I carried on, I got about 3 mins down the road and the same thing happened,
again I waited but this time it just refused to start, ended up having to get home on the back of a recovery van
I't was suggested to me by a mechanic that it may be the charging system even though the starter motor was turning over strongly so that is where I started, I checked the battery first which was sitting at 12.4v
I have a charger so I put it on charge over night, it is now at about 12.8v whilst plugged into the bike, I then tried to start it and it started straight up
the reading whilst the starter motor was running went down to about 11v so I think this is okay
Next I checked the stator resistance, the workshop manual says it should be between 0.18-0.27, my multimeter is fairly cheap and it read 0.7 on each cable so not sure I trust
that reading as I think that's about as low as it reads
Next I checked the stator AC output, each cable showed about 14-15v at idle and over 50v at about 5k rpm which seems okay
Next I checked the battery voltage at idle and 5k rpm, at idle it read roughly the battery voltage plus a little extra, at 5k it read 13.9v, strangely from idle up to about 2k rpm it went to about 14.4v then anything past that would drop down to 13.9v, even revving it to the max, is this normal on these bikes?
I guess it could cut out for a lot of reasons but you guys think it's a problem with the reg/rec?
Sorry for the long winded post but thought it best to describe in detail!
Any help appreciated thanks.
