Default Gold is BAD!

I've got a spot on my V&H Longshots that is goldish in color. I've tried a few things to get it off, but to no avail. What works on this stuff?

If Never Dull, Wenol, or Flitz doesn't work, you might try Tarn-X (which is a weak HCl solution, I think) or Naval Jelly (which is a NaOH solution.) DO NOT mix them.
I would "test spot" the latter two, just because you're getting more chemically aggressive.

That "gold" the underlying plating material? Has the chrome rubbed off in that location or just a bad plating?

(Mmmmmm, maybe copper. Haven't heard of using gold as a pre-plate material, due to cost and thus, typically applied in much thinner layer. But, if it IS gold, pull off the pipes and stuff them into the "pre-paid envelope" and get BIG MONEY for them!!!! )
