Default z650 charging problem

Hola Folks,

I have a '78 z650 which had a regulator and a rectifier charging the battery. the rectifier burnt out so I have got a rectifier/regulator which is new.
The problem is now the battery is not charging. I have done all the tests for the stator and field coils and they both check out O.K.
The new rec/reg has 6 wires whereas the old system has 7 wires.
I have wired up like this:-

engine side reg/rec side
3 yellow wires 3 yellow wires
red/white red/white(to battery)
black black (to earth)
brown brown (to wiring curcuit for ign, lights etc
green wire(field coil) not connected

I think the green wire should have power from somewhere to activate the field coils. Does anyone know where this wire goes for defo as I am worried about damaging something.
I suspect when the field coils are activated, the charging process may start again.
I get about 12.5V at any revs with no variation.

hmm, your manual will have an answer I would assume. Good luck on the answer, wire colors change bike to bike it seems every so often.

Hola Dragone,

I think the green wire is to excite the stator and is on the switching circuit, according to the wiring diagram it goes back to the alternator, through a field coil and then to earth. Tonight I am going to measure the voltages on the wires, if there are any, with the engine running to see if the connections are right. If I still have no joy I'll try putting the green wire on the switching circuit and see what happens.

Took a peek in my Z250 manual, and the only green wires that I seen were for the lighting.

Put the green wire on the switched circuit and fired her up, 14v's across the battery at 4000revs. I'll go for a run tonight to make sure there are no problems and let you all know how I get on. Looking good so far though

I need help with a 1980 Z250. When I connect the rectifier to the wiring I can hear the coils being energise. If I leaf the connection on the battery goes dead. Is it a fair asumption that the rectifier is faulty? Where can I buy a replacement part?
