I've just picked up (for free) an old '73 S1 250 triple two-stroke. A bit of a basket case but should be some fun. From everyone I've known who rode H1 or H2 bikes, which are newer relatives of the S1, these tend to be a bit of a panic when cornering. Are there any upgrades that help with this problem? Perhaps a different swingarm, better suspension/fork springs, new steering head bearings, fork brace? I would like to put the bike back on the road if I can find some parts (with luck) but maybe not if it will have serious safety issues. Any thoughts? Angus....

 

wasnt the issue back then the frame twisting while cornering and a *** load of power that caused the instability ?

 

That could very well be: this is a very heavy bike, 438 lbs dry and a strange frame. Maybe it could use some gussets. And a few pounds lost. Thx....Angus....

Yes, post some pics.
Besides the frame flex, the suspension needed tweaked and the brakes needed to be better. I would think with better suspension and setup, that some of the felt flex would be minimized.

 

It will be my pleasure to post some pics.Once I figure out how to do that on this forum. Probably later tonight. And by the way I found a web site that can supply me with new upgrade parts such as suspension, bronze swingarm bushings and tapered steering head bearings. Also a manual (which is out of print). I think the old triples had numerous issues: forks too small, frame too flexy, brakes too weak, those horrible stock exhaust pipes (but they looked cool!), scary tires back then, weight balance all wrong.
BUT, there is nothing like the hit of two-stroke triple (even today.) If you haven't ridden one, find one.

Thanks for the support guys! I did find a supplier of aftermarket exhaust and electronic ignition also as well many other upgrades. Here are the pics of the Basket Case. ( I hope..) Including the baskets of extra parts. Cheers. Angus...
