Default new guy, new bike, couple of questions

hi, i'm wolfie, new to motorcycling, these forums, and all that other fun stuff and i had a couple of questions:

is there any kind of Kawasaki vin site for pre 1981? i bought a custom bike from a guy, and he had no idea what he was talking about. he told me it was a KZ175, but that doesn't exist, so i've been trying to trace it to what it actually is. but so far no avail. i know the frame's VIN number is 2k6-010918, and the motor has 2k5-001313.

i have pictures of it here: Wolfgang_Wanless's Library | Photobucket

the real difficulty i'm having with it is something from that era that has the big central shock in the frame. i can't find any models that have anything like that.

any help with this would be awesome, or at least some direction to head. let me know what you guys think. thanks!

Hello Wolfie,

I can't help you with your questions, but that sure is one interesting looking scoot. Welcome to the forum. Hopefully someone can come along and offer some assistance.

Was the bike registered? If so, as what and wouldn't that have the VIN on it?

If I understand, he has a VIN, but the bike is all customed out and he'd like to know what the thing originally was.

Welcome to KF and congrats on the nice looking ride (would make a great pit bike). Looks to be of a yamaha yz frame ( backbone shock) and 125cc engine from the 1978 era with some RD components added (wheels, tank...possibly). Those are not kawi numbers that you listed. Check this link out for some possible help. I am sure that there are other sites out there to stumble across. Good luck.

edit: Now you are making me go shopping for either an RZ350 or the RD400 now. sheesh......and here is a find from that link that is above...YZ125E 1978 125 Off-Road 2K6 2K6-000101 Welcome to KF anyways! lol on the badaz ride.

Welcome to the forums. Hey Drag a guy here in town has 2 RD400's in a shed at his house along with a goldwing, and this bike.

awesome. i'm ganna go get the correct battery for it. that'll probably be conducive to trying to get it to run.

and it actually has a cb550 tank on there, paired with this little engine means i'm never ganna have to fill it up basically.

Good to know. Which means that the wheels, brakes and such are most likely from the CB550 donor bike as well.
