I'm a knucklehead

Well, I did a stupid thing yesterday. I stopped by a friends place to show him the new 2008 ZZR600. I got off the bike and forgot to put the kickstand down, WTF? Anyway, I felt it going down, with my leg underneath. Incredibly, the only damage was a scratch on the alternator housing cover and nothing else. Being that the bike only has 200 miles on it, I ordered a new cover and gasket. My question is, is there any fluid in there? Is it just a simple removal and reinstallation of thecover? I also ordered a factory service manual, but that won't be readily available. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

there is oil in there that will run out. you may as well take the opportunity to change out the oil for fresh.
once the cover is off you will have to remove the stator coil from the inside of the cover and bolt it into the new one. then reinstall. its pretty simple. you may want to hang onto the replacement a little longer though incase you lay it down again sometime.

I installed the cover on Thursday. A fairly easy job. The service manual sure came in handy. Incidently, the case is, in fact, filled with oil. I decided to drain the oil, and do it's first oil change. The only difficulty I encountered was the removal of the cover once the bolts were removed. I didn't realize that magnetic force was holding it on. After assembly, I decided to wait until today to fill it with oil to allow the small beads of silicone to set up properly. Hopefully, no leaks.

Sorry about that Jay, you could have done what I did and laid the bike over in the yard so you didn't have to get rid of the oil. sounds a little like my day yesterday.:D Glad your leg broke the fall of the bike.............. well you know what I mean.;)

Good work and it's also good/not good to hear I'm not the only one doing bone head things just saddle back up and ride-on.
