better acceleration

My ride 1993 zx7 L1
a lot of information ive been researching is very general maybe you guys can give me a better understanding here. from what ive researched the stock sprockets are 16 and 43. please correct me if i'm wrong. also researching seems to tell me that to get better acceleration i need to lower the amount of teeth on the front and add teeth to the rear? correct? and i also need to change the chain when doing this? correct? next question how many teeth should i go to see a signifigant change? thanks

That sounds about right on the stock numbers.
Now, head's up; what you gain in acceleration, you'll proportionately lose on top end. Speed versus acceleration is a pretty finite system. You may move more quickly, but your revs will also climb faster. So, instead of shifting maybe twice between red lights in town to wax your buds, you'll shift three times to cover the same distance; but get there faster. The 7's ARE geared just a bit tall, admittedly, but I wouldn't go extreme on the dental work; maybe around 15/47. Your stock chain will PROBABLY still be OK with this.
I'd love to see a pic of your bike. The old 7's had a TON of race development during their lifespan. Set up properly, they can still out-handle young punks.

I do not have the 93, but that is in the ball park I think as well. My 90 I think was 16/45 and I went with 16/47 for the portland track (lost about 5mph on the top end but had better times in the corners). But nonetheless, you may not want to jump too drastic of a number. I personnally would not go to less than a 15 front due to the chain kink/bind or loss of radius. Bump up the rear 4 teeth to see if you like it or not, if not at least you can see which direction you would prefer.

Its pretty common to drop one tooth in the front.

thanks everyone. i'm still not sure if i want to change it. i do a bunch of short rides (back and forth to work, around town) however maybe twice a month we might ride 200 miles in a day and i don't want to lose my top end for that. i just need to buy another one lol and then i can have both top end and acceleration.
