Is putting a kickstarter on our bike as easy as removing what looks like a rubber plug on the side of the motor and sliding one in, or is it much more involved ? (im not crazy about relying on a battery when im out in the middle of nowhere)

No you have to pull the cover and put in a gear and spring and washers. I did the install on the wife's bike last year, but the KLX is more involved.

Its $280 at Babbits, buy it there. And Deej is right, its kinda involved. Gotta pul the cover off, put in some parts. There's a great write-up on it on here:
