Something to be shared with all

I usually stick to my hole, known as the KLX sub forum here, but I must share this with everyone here. I just got back from my honeymoon in Maui, and did a drive as some call "The road to Hana", a little town on the East side of the island. Some of you may have heard it, or it could even be posted in these forums somewhere but I'm going to share it anyway.
The starting point we took was about 50 miles from Hana, however it takes 3 or more hours (depending on how often you stop) to do. Its basically a windy road around the coast that has over 600 curves and 54 one lane bridges, through jungle and coastline. Theres a bunch of waterfalls and other amazing views around every corner. This road was MADE for bikes, slab sluts or moles alike (although speed would not be a factor here because there are other people on these very narrow turns, with nearly every inch being a blind spot). The next time I go I will definately be renting a bike, most likely sticking to my roots and be it a dual sport of some kind, since you can venture off the pavement and hit some amazing looking trails towards the many beaches you pass. Unfortunately my wife and I had a coupe so we could not do any such venturing, like the guy in this jeep: Attachment 29450 The views were absolutely amazing and it would just be the greatest thing to do on a bike. Some of you I'm sure have been lucky enough to do it, but I cannot wait until the day I can do this ride on a bike, it would be unlike anything else imo. Heres a few other pics I took along the way (I've got over a 100 so I just picked a few to give you the idea) Attachment 29451 Attachment 29452 Attachment 29453 Attachment 29454 Attachment 29455 Attachment 29456 I'm pretty sure I was Polynesian in another life because I am absolutely drawn and connect to this land. And my GAWD the biking would be awesome!!!!! Truely a paradise. Cheers |

Nice, I've heard of the road but those pics really drive it home. You shoulda took your rental car offroad, "Hey enterprise, you're escort is stuck on a beach 40 miles outside of town, bring me another."

RE: Something to be shared with all
Wow... those are some great pictures. Sounds like you had a great time. Definately rent a bike next time though!

I'll be definately getting a bike next time (and there will be a next time). I just wish i got more of the windy roads (I was driving unfortunately) |
RE: Something to be shared with all
Congrats on the honeymoon,my wife and i went there in 86 i think we took that road to get to the seven sacred pool's.
my wife had been there before but that road was a gravel road and they would not let you take rental car's on it. did you bike down the volcano, that was the highlight of my trip awesome ride. |
RE: Something to be shared with all
Cool pics, looks like a lot of fun. I am hoping to get there myself in a couple of years, I will be sure and rent a bike when I am there.

We were going to do the bikes, but we had a bunch of other things we'd rather do,and my wife is chicken. I guess last wednesday was the last tour they did of that, possibly ever (i guess 3 people have died doing it). Did the summit of that volcano though in a car, spectacular! |
RE: Something to be shared with all
I confess I scrolled down to the pics first before reading the post. When I saw the first picture I felt a little twinge and nce I saw pic #3 I said to myself, "This has to be the Road to Hana." Then I read your post which confirmed it. I love that road. I've driven it twice and would love to ride it some day.
Congrats on getting hitched and thanks for the pics. It's true, pics don't do that road and the sights all around it any justice. |
RE: Something to be shared with all
P.S. We don't have a helmet law here. I'm just saying.
(disclaimer-I always wear mine) |
RE: Something to be shared with all
wow, congrats on the wedding and on the very nice photos
thanks for sharing. |
RE: Something to be shared with all
been there done that!!!( i want to do it again LOL)Loved the road. I stayed at the Royal Lahana. (the golf course) we came across some horses that came up to the car and ate off our lock. LOL Our rental car was not permited on it, but we all know how that goes. Did you make as far as to see the lava channals where the lava was metting the ocean? One hell of a sight.
Congrats. |
RE: Something to be shared with all
I like to get on my ZX10-R and cruise all around that island in Test Drive Unlimited.

RE: Something to be shared with all
Thanks all. It was breathtaking for sure. And I'd say its safe enough to do without a helmet since the odds of you crashing are pretty slim since your not going very fast, although the blind turns.....not for me anyway I'd pass out from the heat if I had a lid on (I'm a snowman after all)
Unfortunately we didnt go past Hana got rice, I didn't do enough research and thought the road to Hana, was just to Hana [:'(]. Next time, bike for sure!!! Might even be able to convince the wife to hop on with me :) |
