On Sunday morning there was a meteorite sighting over Northern California. Being an amateur collector myself I decided to do a little research and try to locate it. Well today I found part of the meteorite about 50 miles from my house. So far I'm only the second person to find one. Definitely a great area to search, but man I'm beat after 12-miles of walking in the foothills.

It was pretty easy to spot with the fusion crust and yes it is magnetic. I'm going to head back to the strewn field on Friday and see if I can find more.

He's not fooling me.....that's a cracked magnet out of a Jeep starter. The "Meteorite sighting" was just a flash when the newbie took the Jeep offroad and the thing exploded and burned when he bashed the fuel tank on a big rock. Fire got so hot, all that was left were the starter magnets......

(Er......slow day at work......) :D

I haven't been on much the last couple weeks because I've been hunting a new meteorite that went over the bay area on 10/17. Last Monday (10/22) I found a 66 gram piece. Only the second one found at the time. In the two weeks since it fell only 4 pieces have been found.

Here's one of the stories that was in the paper
Dismissed 'rock' a meteorite after all - SFGate

I've been going down a few times a week to hunt. Although I'm beginning to get tired of all the walking and don't anticipate too many more trips.

Here's some pictures of it too.

If you have to walk 12 miles to find something then count me out! LOL
