Finger Mullet's Odyssey....My First Computer Build

Building my first puter, just thought I would share, wish me luck.

5/8/2009 1pm

Parts arrived today...time to start.

Background:

I needed a new computer for my new side business....environmental software development.....the 5 year old, $499 at the time of purchase, machine just wasn't cutting it.

What I need.... a Business only machine that can develop multi threaded C# applications with way serious SQL queries and portable if possible....and no laptop currently made in a reasonable price range will cut it.

I specified a new desktop machine at Dell....$3,450

F' that, I'll build one.....I hope :D

What I Bought:

Budget $1k

Intel Core i7 920 Nehalem 2.66GHz LGA 1366 130W Quad-Core Processor

ASUS Rampage II GENE LGA 1366 Intel X58 uATX Intel Motherboard

OCZ Platinum 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Triple Channel Kit Desktop Memory

CORSAIR CMPSU-550VX 550W ATX12V V2.2 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Compatible with Core i7 Power Supply

SAPPHIRE 100265HDMI Radeon HD 4830 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card

Western Digital Caviar Black WD6401AALS 640GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM (A total of Two set up in raid 0)

LITE-ON 22X DVD Burner with LightScribe Black SATA Model iHAS222-06 - OEM

3 each - OKGEAR 18" SATA II Cable Model GC18ARM12

Total Cost at New Egg = $ 993.89 ....yeah I cut it close....but waaaaaaay cheaper than a mfg unit, provided I can put it together and make it work.

Worlok14 05-08-2009 08:54 PM

I'm not a football fan. I am only into women, fast bikes, and guns in that order. And of course engineering, gotta make money ya know!
I just cannot set around long enough to watch football. The only time I watch football is on Superbowl Sunday cause there are always party's for that!
Strange but true dude!

Worlok14 05-08-2009 08:55 PM

P.s., i'm happy under my rock!

JRock420 05-08-2009 08:55 PM

The Odyssey had a slight delay, my neighbor in my warehouse complex had a customer that wanted to replace the waterpump in two Yammi outboard 250s......ummm Finger Mullet to the rescue and three hours later, two pumps installed and $3 bills in Finger Mullet's Pocket. :D Not bad for slacking around the warehouse drinking carbs. ;)

Let the Odyssey Begin.

New case and Motherboard.

Hey FM, good way to save money, brand name systems are way overpriced, except Mac's of course, but their OS actually works so the value in them is the software. :)

Anyway, I've built hundreds upon hundreds of systems like you're doing. "Build" is a little strong of a word for it. Here's a tip. Just plug all that **** in and turn it on. You'll be golden. :D

Oh, and don't spill your carbs on anything that has wires coming out of it.

I'll try to not spill the carbs....right now they are required for liquid encouragement. Got the motherboard attached.

I'm a lil skeered right now.....cpu install time....Built hundreds NoBrakes? Stay Online ..... advice on the cpu part, or just slap it in there?? Never done this before..lol.

Why is the thermal sink and fan soooo big and heavy???

Well, I must admit it's been a while for me. We did it for work, hundreds of systems for a compute cluster, and frequent upgrades as newer faster hardware became available. The heat sink is so big because those chips run so dang hot. Think about how hot a 130 watt light bulb gets. That's what the heat sink has to keep cool. Also, it allows for a slower running fan which is more quiet, you'll be glad of it if it is sitting anywhere near you. Just drop the CPU in there - carefully of course, make sure you're grounded good, touch something metal on the case, don't want any static, but this time of year is probably not much of a problem, esp in FL with high humidity. Make sure you apply any heat sink grease that came with it and remove any protective coverings from the CPU itself. Needs to make good contact with the heat sink.

Skiff is clean all clam juice and dolphin blood removed.....time for some puter work. ;)

I put in the power supply, Raid 0 hard drives and dvd burner.....time to slide in the mother board and connect all this stuff up....good lawd!! this thing has more wires than an etec fuel injected motor. :D

Good luck bro, hope it works well for ya. Hey was that power house you started up a combined cycle peaker? I have built several and am very familiar with them.
Jus wonderin!

deej 05-10-2009 03:48 PM

Nice job FM, are you going to try and overclock the processor? Did I say that right? I really don't know what I am talking about.:D

Simple cycle, two 58 MW peaker units powered by Rolls Royce turbines, running on natural gas with low sulfur diesel as a backup option. We build the exhaust pipe and stack. Included in our exhaust pipe are silencing baffles, CO oxidation catalyst, NOx reduction catalyst with an ammonia injection system (SCR), and the exhaust gas monitoring and reporting system (CEMS) for the EPA and local regulatory agencies.

I develop the software which runs the SCR and the CEMS as well as the water injection in the turbine.....kinda funny a dumb azze Cracker is given such responsibility. http://www.floridasportsman.com/art/tooth.gif

She's put together and ready for initial startup......yeah she'll be getting overclocked a bit http://images.zeroforum.com/smile/emsmilep.gif ....notice my led clocker on top of the case ready to go. :D

Preliminary power queries on the Florida Power Grid capabilities make it appear that it will be able to take the load. http://floridasportsman.com/art/why.gif

T-12 Beers, and counting ...

Worlok14 05-10-2009 11:49 PM

I hope the next upstream switchyard has their protective relays set correctly so you wont trip out half the state.
FM, I am very familiar with Continuous emissions monitoring systems, and they are a pain in the ass from my experience, but necessary.

Finger Mullet 05-10-2009 11:57 PM

T-3 beers and she is lit up.....http://www.floridasportsman.com/art/cool.gif I had a couple wires backward and Installed Windows before my raid 0 was fully configed.....but reset the raid0 setup and installed window.....whooo whoooo.....she's alive :D

Fast little Biatch she is ... only overclocked to 3.2 gig and she installed Enterprise SQL server in under 5 minutes.....that's gotta be a world record or sumthn. http://floridasportsman.com/art/nilly.gif

I got her running on the Release Candidate of the new Windows 7 64bit which is not available for sale yet......I luv it....installing Visual Studio Professional now...no power blackouts either...I think. http://www.floridasportsman.com/art/cool.gif

Cool.....got any side work for an Environmental Engineer with a PE that can develop a kick azz windows based application using sql as your database.....I got the puter now. :D

Finger Mullet 05-11-2009 12:13 AM

Hey worlock what scada system are you using for your plc interface with analyzers an valves and such......I've been working on a C# interface that can directly communicate and manipulate OPC tags.....Can you say No Scada license fees...

Well .... instead there may be some Finger Mullet Fees....but I bet I'll be cheaper. :D

Worlok14 05-11-2009 02:08 AM

I use scada mostly for power distribution systems, and the scada system is usually specified by the client or utility company. We just install it and get it commissioned. But if I see a place we can work you into the action, I'll let you know.
Glad the new putor-in-a-box works! Looks like a real screamer man.

Nobrakes 05-11-2009 04:52 AM

Nice system, FM. Not too bad, huh? And with the money you saved, you can buy a few spare parts or even a whole system as a hot spare depending on how much of a PITA downtime is. In my experience, the most common thing to go bad are the fans. Second to fans would be power supplies. Luckily those are generally pretty cheap, compared to some of the other parts.
