ignition going bad?

whats up, I just got a 99 zx7 and it has a igniton issue....to start it the key hase to be in a certian spot...so i get it started and i start to ride it....if i get on it hard it cuts off then i mess with the key when im coasting and i hear pow! and it cuts back on...I know it backfires because it is overloading in fuel but why does it cut off? can it be a bad ground or do i just have to get a new ignition?

RE: ignition going bad?

First, I'd check your contacts on the switch. Make sure they're clean and tight. I'm not sure if you can access the actual inside of your ignition switch or not, but if you can, do the same thing. (Sometimes we get lucky!!)
If that doesn't do it, follow the electrical trail, of course including the ground. It sounds like it's in the switch, to me.
If the key wiggles around in the ignition, I suspect the contacts are sloppy. You may want to check at a bike boneyard to see if there's an extra switch available, before you pay a premium for a new one.
Good luck.

I too am thinking the switch. You listed too many issues about the switch just in one post.
