RE: 97 zx-7 not starting
i pulled the the fuel line to the carbs and it had fuel in them i'm wondering is it suposed to make that priming noise when you flip the switch cause my gixxer did and this one doesn't.its wierd cause last week we wired the pump straight to the battery and it barlley clicked.but today i tap it and i clicked loud and thats when i noticed the fuel in the line it didn't have that last week

I do not hear my fuel pump on my 7. But it is also a '90 if that has anything to do in comparison. But my 06 10r, you can definitely hear the pump.
Was the fuel coming out of the line when you pushed the starter button?

yep its coming out thats a plus cause last week it didn't i tinhk we freed up the pump beacuse it was sitting for a while.pulled the plugs they were black as hell and reaked of gas so ths could also be a big issue in why it doesn't start.i also heard something about if the relay is bad the bike won't start, and if u pull the relay it will start up do you know if this is true ? thanks ed

RE: 97 zx-7 not starting
hey i have a 97 zx7r also and have had the same problem. first i have a few questions for you first off has the bike been sitting for a extended period of time with gas in it? if so you will have to flush the tank, replace fuel filter and more than likely clean the carbs. also have you checked to see if the battery is charged? if so check the relay it's self you can short the two posts and press the start button at the same time if it turns over then the relay is most likely the problem. I ust went through my bike because it started to bog, then decided to not run at all. upon flushing the tank i found nasty lacquered up fuel with tons of build up from sitting. then i decided to pull the carbs off and open them up. they were equaly nasty. then i decided to tackle the staring problem and diagnosed it as explained above. hope this helps pm me if you would like me to e-mail the shop manual to you.
