Default 1992 ZX7R (K) fuel system

what is the fuel pump for on the 92 K model. It has Keihn carbs - I cant imagine that they are pressure feeding the carbs???? Also, on the carb linkage there is a microswitch at full throttle - what's that for?? Is that when this fuel pump kicks in?

I've had a drop in gas mileage, it idles rich (visible unburnt fuel from exhaust) plus a rich smell. I'm going to take it apart and look for a stuck float, but anybody think of anything else?

Good idea on checking float height and integredy. Not sure on the micro switch that you listed. Did the K model have the flat slide keihn?

yeah, 92 K model was a full horsepower bike. Only 500 made it into the U.S.

OK another question on that 92 7R (k) model. Next to the fuel petcock there is an electric valve with fuel lines running to the carbs. What is that for?? anyone know?
thanks

yes it is the 49116. I am thinking that is what is called the "fuel enrichment solenoid" but I cant find anything about what activates it, or when it's open or closed or just what it really does. I'm thinking mine is stuck open and shouldnt be.... hence the gas smell at idle and horribly crappy drop in fuel mileage

I am not experienced with the fcr carbs. But, a solenoid is just a switch. A switch is operated by another factor, ie another switch. So I am learning with ya on this.

talked to the dealer today, and one of the older service guys was familiar with the bike. He pulled out their service manual and found that it is the fuel enrichment solenoid valve. It gets power from the microswitch on the throttle tree so at wide open throttle the engine has extra fuel.

So just pulling the electrical plug off made the bike run a lot better. It must have been stuck open. I will have to pull it off and try blowing through it to see if thats definitely what is going on.

The bike is never ridden at W.O.T. anyway so doing away with that will not concern me at all.

If your manual calls it a solenoid valve, then that is what it is.

In engineering, the term solenoid may also refer to a variety of transducer devices that convert energy into linear motion. The term is also often used to refer to a solenoid valve, which is an integrated device containing an electromechanical solenoid which actuates either a pneumatic or hydraulic valve, or a solenoid switch, which is a specific type of relay that internally uses an electromechanical solenoid to operate an electrical switch; for example, an automobile starter solenoid, or a linear solenoid, which is an electromechanical solenoid.

Take some pics if possible when you tear into the solenoid valve.
