Default Spark Plugs

What SPs are you guys using with a slip-on and a K&N filter? Mine ('06 with 4,800) still look good, but since track seasson in almost here I'm planning on buying new ones.

Also, anyone running octanes under 91 on your 05-06 ZX-6R? When I dynoed mine the tech told me that it would benefit from running 89. The manual says to run over 90, but I've always wondered if going one under is that bad.

Cheers.

NGK's are good plugs.

I would highly advise against usinganything less that 91 octane on these bikes unless you want a Rod sticking through your case. These bikes have compression ratios above 12:1 and require the highest pump octane available. You can cause some serious engine damage due to detonation from low grade fuel. The Tech doesn't know what he's talking about. That is why you get up to a 4-5% increase in HPwhen you run race gas because it's a higher octane.

MR8
For use in 125 and 250 GP 2-stroke bikes and karting applications requiring high octane values. AMA legal except Supercross and Outdoor Nationals. Fueled the 2002 and 2003 AMA 250 GP champions. For optimum horsepower and performance, do not store this fuel in vehicle — drain fuel system.
• Color: Yellow
• Oxygenated: Yes
• Motor Octane: 107
• Specific Gravity: .730 at 60° F

MR9
MR9 has been the most successful fuel for 4-stroke road racing and Supermoto applications for the last two years. Like MR10, it's targeted for all classes in AMA Pro Racing that allow leaded race fuel. Dyno tests have proven an 8-9% increase in power over pump gas. Used by many premier factory and factory support teams, MR9 fueled a sweep of all AMA road racing championships in 2004 and 2005, as well as the Supermoto, Supermoto Lite and Supermoto Unlimited championships in 2005. [/b]
• Color: Clear
• Oxygenated: Yes
• Motor Octane: 87
• Specific Gravity: .718 at 60° F

MR10â„¢
MR10 is our newest fuel for 4-stroke road racing where lower octane can be tolerated. It's targeted to make the most horsepower under AMA Pro Racing leaded fuel rules. Dyno tests have proven up to a 2 horsepower increase over our MR9 in 1000cc bikes and a one horsepower increase for 600cc's. This translates to as much as a 10% increase in power over pump gas, meaning nothing on the market makes more power than MR10! Because its octane rating is lower than MR9's, it may not be suitable for higher compression applications.

Just thought I'd share this sites info.

I was told to watch out for the formulation in 91too. I cant remember what it was to look for. All the good stations around here carry 93 so i dont worry about it. There are a few with 97(may be wrong) and you get close to any of the race tracks around here, you can find the race gas (dont know octane, never ran it).

Wish they had higher then 91 here in CA. There are like 5 stations in a 60-70 miles that have higher then 91 but charge an arm and a leg for them.

I ran the 100+ in my bike. I didn't notice any difference over the 91 I usually use. now I dumped in a bottle of VP octane boost and she ran liked a bat out of hell.

They have started adding Ethanol in all gas now so the performance factor is less although cleaner burning. Ethanol is alchol from Corn/ Sugar and when you run alcohol, you need more of it to get the same performance so you would have to run richer mixture. The Alcohol Funny Cars are very fast and powerful but the jets on those cars are huge and they use a lot of fuel (Alcohol) GPH/M.

Octane is the rating of the fuel and the flame retardant (for a slower burn)in it to prevent detonation/ per-ignition. That is why when you run 87 octane in a vehicle, it will sometimesping/ knock. If you run 87 or 89 in your bike (Performance bikes above 11:1 compression ratios) it will knock &ping but you may not hear it because of headers or other cam chain noise etc. Run the highest grade pump gas recommended!
