That is just an old rule of thumb that has been passed down to me from the generations, know what I mean. I am sure that it can be reduced to every couple of rides or every couple of hundred miles. I am just obsseive compulsive about my bikes. 
I just checked the can and it doesn't say how often to do it and it also recommends a minimum dry time of only 10-15 mins or until tacky.
