05-06 636 ZX6R/RR Suspension settings
Here's a Baseline suspension setting reference that I got from the 05 issues of Sport Rider. It's probably a good place to start. Also there is another post by Notstock which is an excellent site.

Here's the setup for 05-06 ZX6R 636's. Front: Preload; 3 lines showing. Rebound Dampening; 2.5 turns out (counter-clockwise) from full stiff. Compression Dampening; 1.5 turns out (counter-clockwise) from full stiff. Rear: Preload; 2 treads showing. Rebound Dampening; 14 clicks out (counter-clockwise) from full stiff. Compression Dampening; .75 turns out (counter-clockwise) from full stiff. For 05/06 ZX6RR 600's: FRONT: Preload: 4 lines showing; Rebound dampening: 2.5 turns out from full stiff Compression Dampening: 2 turns out from full stiff. REAR: Preload: Minimum; (Follow the preload setting procedure in the above website) dependent upon your weight. Rebound Dampening: 8 Clicks out from full stiff; Compression Dampening: 1.5 turns out from full stiff Try it and you can always fine tune it to suit you. |

The adjustments are very easy to do (screws turn real easy and no lock nuts are present) so don't be afraid to try these out. I put tape on the end of my screwdriver point just to ensure no scratchs (all screws turn real easy so probably wouldn't be a problem anyway). None of the much harder to do spring preloads are changed. No wrenching, only soft easy standard head screwdriver adjustments are made.
STOCK SETTINGS: FRONT Preload - 3 lines Rebound - 1 3/4 counter clockwise (cc) Compression - 3/4 cc REAR Preload - 2 lines Rebound - 8 clicks stock Compression - 3/4 cc All settings were taken from stock setting to full firm (clockwise). I like SR's '05 settings on my '06 636. I tried this and it is not nearly as harsh and I like it(I'm 155lbs). Sport Rider July 2006 decided the new trail and rake of the '06 made the suspension too soft (at least for the track). But, then they go and suggest lessening the front preload by a line, go figure. I am staying with the '05 settings. New 2006 Sport Rider track settings: 636 FRONT Preload - 4 lines showing Rebound - 2.5 from full firm Compression - 1.5 from full stiff REAR Preload - 15mm thread showing from top of threads to top of spring Rebound - 11 clicks out from full stiff Compression - .5 turns out from full stiff 600 FRONT Preload - 5 lines showing Rebound - 2.5 turns from full stiff Compression - 2 turns from full stiff REAR Preload - 19 mm thread showing from top of threads to top of spring Rebound - 15 click from full stiff Compression - 3 turns from full stiff |

These are good instructions on how to set up your suspension for you. It will get your bike to where its suspension can work to its fullest abilities. After setting the sag then you can try adjusting a click here or a click there to tweak it. Always only make slight adjustments, 1 or 2 at a time. It is a must to start at the proper sag. Ride safe. |

As Notstock said: Proper Sag is a must. The other settings don't really do any good unless the proper sag is set for your weight with gear. Once Sag is set, then you can experiment with the other settings. Start at a baseline and make one change at a time or you'll never know what worked or didn't. It's best to research how and what the suspension does/ works so you can see what the bike needs and how it reacts when you ride; how much preload, rebound dampening, compression dampening, etc.

I had to add more spring preload front & rear that the suggested settings. The front forks were bottoming at the track.
