500R to Zx-14. Too big a jump?
 

Hi,

I'm a relatively new rider on a 500r but have been putting in a 1000 miles/mo on freeways so I'm racking up the miles fast. I'm thinking of getting a zx-14 strictly for long-distance cruising/commuting. My question is, is this too big a jump to go from a "beginners" bike to something like the Zx-14?

I'm 40, conservative in myriding skills with an even throttle hand.

How will the ZX-14 feel in comparison (handling-wise)? I now it'll produce a lot more power/torque but I'm more interested in how it'll handle on freeways compared to the smaller half liiter Ninja. I've noticed that I get blown around a bit on windy days. Will the 14's bigger size help with this?

I've sat on a 14 in a showroom and the position felt just right.

Any input from the 14 riders, especially those who have ridden a 500r is appreciated.

It will be like a freaking rocket. As long as you use common sense and ride with in your abilities there will be now problem.

Huge difference not much is going to move you around on the freeway. if it was me id go for a 1000 or zx12.

Too much of a jump, if you ride the bike daily and want more power you should look at something more along the lines of a z1000 or maybe even a touring bike, different brand. The 500 is quick but not as aggressive in handling and throttle response as the 6r-14r's. don't look at anything above 1000cc's

I am not saying the 14 is a good or bad choice for you, what are your suspension settings on the EX? And what will you use on the 14? The 14 is pretty large, but the wind will still buffet you around. It is also heavier. If you feel comfy with the weight and have a good feel for control, I would say go for it. I will also give you one year before you get a speeding ticket!

The 14 is a lot of bike for what you are going to do with it. There are better choices for commuting. The 14 gets about 35 MPG on the freeway and tires last about 8 to 10 k and are a couple bills a copy. I bought mine for a pure toy and keep my little ex 250 for my commuter (only4 milesof my 12mile commute are on the freeway). The 14 is not too bad in cross winds but being mosly aluminum it is light for its size. Throttle response is linear and very predictable, you will have no problems with that aspect. It is a great bike I love mine.

For touring the 14 is a much better choice than the 1000 especially if you are a big Dude. It is twice as comfortable. That is why it is classified as a sport touring bike. Now you have to ask yourself, do I have the self control to not nail the throttle until you have put at least 3000 miles on it and know you can handle the acceleration without killing yourself. You are the only one that can answer your question. I promise you that the 14 is far superior in the touring arena. Think hard Grasshopper!

I think if you've been riding a while and are mature enough to handle the HP, (and you can get the 14 for a good price,) I'd say go for it. But, I think a 12 would be just as serviceable for you, and you could find a gently used one for a lot less. Depends on what you want, and how you ride, really.

If the main reason you want the biggest bike is to cut down on wind buffeting, I suspect you will probably be disappointed in the gains. All bikes experience some buffeting and although heavy is better than light, it's not like the issue goes away.
