Default fork guards + idle rpm

Hello,
I just bought a used (2006) ninja 650. It has leaking fork seals and I want to clean them by passing some plastic around the tube. It would be easier to do if the fork guards were out of the way. Does anyone know how they come off? Pry? Twist?
Also, the bike idles around 800 rpm according to the tach on the bike. Is it too low or is the tach in error?
Thanks.

About the only active discussions on this forum revolve around KLX 250S bikes. You may have better luck at this forum:
