Best upgrade...MSF course. Learn how to ride safely first. Your skills won't surpass what the bike is capable of for awhile.

To start out I would also say the MSF course is the first step, then I would look at a set of R&G sliders to protect the fairings on the bike. You can be extremly careful with the bike, and most like one day you will still drop it. At some point it happens to almost everyone.

My .002 is to hang the oem plastics on the wall, take a certified race license and have fun. Doubt you would like street riding after that.

Get some R&G frame sliders to protect your bike and some Suburban Machinery handle-bars so it'll look and feel like a real sport bike. That's all I needed. This bike is so cool anything else will mess up it's feng-shui

Oh yeah, and keep that throttle wrist flat so you don't goose it and almost hit a utility truck like I did[]

Good riding gear. Solid jacket, helmet, boots, gloves, pants.

Gear to protect your *** first. The MSF, or at least a few hundred miles of riding with some other people who love motorcycles and living.

And then for the bike, I heard one yesterday and they don't sound that mean. They are a twin -- so they're more "rumbly" and less "zippy" -- which is a great choice for a beginner I think. I would try to find a new exhaist that sounds meaner... they're small to fit under the bike though so I'm not sure how much better you can make them sound.
