new engine; what to expect on starting...?
 

over the last weekend i swapped out an old engine for a newer one, and have everything hooked up except the battery, which needed recharging. i'm at school right now but plan on going back home again this weekend to finish up the project and was wondering if anyone had done this before (swapping an engine that is..). is there anything i should do to get the bike running the first time i start it up (may be a dumb question) as in "priming" it? or should i hook up the battery and push the button and have it running just like that, assuming the engine is in proper working order... thanks

Did you adjust the valves before putting the engine in or clean out the carbs?

If not that would have been a good idea to do..... rather then that just hook up the battery and start her up.

i cleaned out the carbs but dont have the know-how to do the valves and dont have a manual...so i wouldnt attempt to do that. i'll probably run it by the dealer in town whenever it all gets running so they can do that

the valves are easy just get the book it will save youe baccon

Should just start up if everything was done properly. Get them valves checked though.

How long since the "newer" one was run? If it's been several months, you may want to hit the plug holes (i.e. cylinders) with a light shot of lube, just to "make an offer to the piston gods." Never hurts to make sure everything is well-lubed, before you hit that button.

i agree with jeff,, also get the manual, and the valve adjustment tool, it will save you money and if you already tackled an egine replacement, the valves should be another fun project.

On an unknown engine that has been sitting. I like to pour diesel down the cylinder, and let it sit for a day or two. Rings like to stick to the walls because of rust. Valve checks would be a different topic later on for me.
