Working on an 81 kz750 ltd, could use some help

I just got a 1981 kz750 ltd, and it needs some love to say the least. I've always had project cars and am pretty handy, but I've never done a bike this old before. Im going to try and build a cafe racer style bike I'm really hoping I haven't gotten in over my head. The bike appears to be all there, but I'm already experiencing wiring problems. I haven't even been able to try to turn it over because I'm getting no response from the start button. Does anyone know where I can find a good service manual or some wiring diagrams? I figure that would be a good place to start. Any suggestions on what could be preventing it from even trying to start would also be helpful. I got the bike on Craig's list so I know very little about it. The guy rewired it and I'm hoping he didn't screw anything up :/

hahaha, yes indeed. Have you checked out the gen motorcycle area? I do have a hard copy of that model though which really does no help to you at the moment. Did you test across the starter button to confirm that it works? Welcome to KF

Ahh, that was my 2nd bike. '81 or '82. Not sure. Did you google it?
I saw several hits.
Please keep it touch here and let us know how it goes.

when people rewire stuff its always a gamble that you are going to also do a rewire.
strip it down, check connections, fuses, if he has rewired and things look clean and organized you might be lucky with something simple.

Sometimes a local library will have manuals you can borrow or photo copy from.

Thanks everybody for the responses. I found one wire that had a weak connection, so I fixed that and tried again. This time, the lights dimmed and my hand got shocked a little bit. So I'm assuming thee has to be a short somewhere, I just can't figure out where. MOST of the wiring looks pretty good, I guess I'll just have to systematically check all of it
