Earlier today I was seduced by a 19 year old maroon and gold Vulcan 800. Barely a mark on it. Paint, chrome and seat look darn near showroom new. The issue ... a valve apparently broke and did irreparable damage inside the rear cylinder. Independent motorcycle shop owner showed me the crushed spark plug he'd pulled from it. Explained that he'd done hundreds of engine rebuilds, but in situations like this his best fixes usually only last a few thousand miles, then things begin to go badly again. His suggestion was to get on eBay, buy a used engine, come back to him and he'd install it for $500-$600.

Please feel free to share any resources you are aware of for a Vulcan engine. Looks like they trade, delivered, for about $800 on eBay.
