New to the forum and motorcycles
That's cool. I would think there should be some KZ750's, early 600's, (some Honda 600's) or even some Suzuki 750E's on the market within that price range. I'd probably stick with reliable chain-drive in this vintage just for ease of maintenance; older belts and shafts get pricey. You might also consider a dual sport like a gently used KLX. It would allow you more riding flexibility. Keep us in the loop on your search. We want you to get a bike you can enjoy (with no hidden expensive or mechanical surprises.)
Thank you so much Jeff! I didn't expect such helpfulness and suggestions of something other than Kawasaki! I'm actually talking with a guy about a 83 Yamaha Virago. But after reading this, I notice this is a shaft drive and it only gets 11.95mpg?? Can that be right? I was hoping for something fun but fuel efficient. That's worse than my Lincoln Navigator.
Nothing necessarily WRONG with shafties (or belts), but on the older models with wear and tear, the repair/replace can get into your wallet deep. You don't want that. I'd just stay with the basic inline-4 (whatever size) street bike or a water-cooled dual sport, both with chain final drive. Reliable; inexpensive.
