Great Advice For A Newbie

I am a brand new rider and I of course am in that dilemma about a beginner bike. I am definitely considering the Kawasaki Ninja 300 or the Honda, but I was wondering if a person liked the cruiser style of bike more so than the sports bike style what would be a good beginner cruiser style bike? I have not seen any 300cc cruiser style bikes. I am 54 years old, 5Ft10" weighing 230lbs. I am a Paramedic so I have been to those riders who thought they were bullet proof and found out with their lives that sadly they were not. Last year had a good friend who was a long time experienced rider lose control and took a bad header now he is a paraplegic instead of getting ready for retirement. Thanks for any advice given in advance.

Take Care
Darren

Darren,
Do a web search on "small cruiser motorcycle" and you should find a few good articles. The Suzuki Boulevard and Yamaha V Star 250 catch my eye.

Good luck on your search.

Well it's 2019. almost 10 years from the original post.

I am a new rider and honestly the original post is a long read - so I didn't read over all of it. I do agree with what I did see, but will add that in my situation:
  • I'm 50, and I DO have disposable income. :D
  • I no longer feel comfortable sitting on the coveted Green Kawasaki Ninja I always wanted. :(
  • I am wiser and realize I don't need a Ninja to be happy
  • I am wiser to know that I don't need 600cc or greater to go from point A to point B
  • I do still like "wild" styled bikes

So for me after some research on my own, I came across a very good "mid-ground" to satisfy my Ninja craving with a 50 year old body and wisdom. ;)

Kawasaki Z400 ABS.

Hi and thanks for letting me join!

I learned late in life 54, fell off a moped @16 swore never again! What happened?????
CBT on a Marauder test on a 600 Yamaha bought a CBR600. 2 years in football injury meant no riding ( yes Soccer at 56!!!) now back, older more sensible and a 2008 ER 6N,
22 miles ridden and in love with the road again and what a fun way to do it, cool looking bike had the storm trooper headlamp removed by previous owner and a big round one fitted. If everyday feels as good as today I may just have my bike for life!!!
