UK fella here.I own a 1984 gpz550 unit rack. It's a project as I brought it after it had stood 5 years.ebay find for just £69.so before starting it had tank drained,new petrol,carbs cleaned,new leads + plugs, oil,filter,battery and clutch.also gave the wiring a once over and re-wrapped it with a more modern blade fuse box.runs real well and no usual rattle.but........every time I go to put in 1st it cuts out the engine.any ideas anyone?clutch works fine cos when it's not running and in first I pull the lever and it moves.release and it locks the wheel as it's in gear.please help.

 

See if the bike has a switch on the kick stand that will shut off the engine if the stand is down when putting in gear. I had mine fail before. Drives you nuts, start bike - put in gear - engine shuts off - repeat... If so, figure out how to remove it. My KLX650 worked with an open circuit to run so all I had to do was unplug it. The KLX250 had a closed circuit to run, so I had to connect the wires. I tracked it up to the first plug, cut the wire on the stand siide plug and connected them. No more problems as long as I don't try to take off with the side stand down.
