Default Smoky 07 KX65...too smoky - HELP

OK, so here's my problem. Moved my son up from a KLX110 to a KX65 last month. From the beginning, it seemed to smoke a little but not terrible. I got it home and drained the tank (guy I bought it from claimed that he ran a richer mixture than 32:1 for some reason...probably should have been my first red flag) & put in 32:1 mixture w/91 octane gas. I checked the needle position, which was in the middle. Still smoky.

Now, I know I have many things still to check but wanted to see if I could get some expert insight before chasing my tail here.

I can't yet tell if it's burning trans oil, but what's involved if it is? Big job? The smoke isn't white, but I'd probably want to replace the water pump seal while I'm in there, no? What about jetting? Maybe it's a bad float?

That little voice in my head tells me that the guy I bought it from lied to me & that it's the trans oil (clutch seal maybe?) but that's not for sure yet.

Help? Sorry for all the questions

Oh yeah, the plug isn't all gooey and black like a fouled plug but I put a new one in anyway. Maybe a hotter plug? I've got a 9 in there now. Maybe an Iridium 10? OR is that just a band aid fix?

Last post from me about this, I promise!

Here's what I'm going to do first - repack muffler, rebuild carb, maybe try a bit leaner mixture and/or hotter plug. Thought?
