Default Kawasaki kx250

just curious about gearing on my 2001 kx 250 2 stroke. i have the stock gearing on it right now and i like the feeling of the bike it rides great i never find myself wanting to go faster top speed but in some technical trails i would like a bit more torque, i am very new to trail riding and would like some help selecting the proper gearing for my bike.

I don't know about the specifics of your bike, but it's often fairly easy and inexpensive to try a one-tooth smaller or larger counter (front) sprocket. A one tooth change on the front sprocket should be noticeable. Give it a try.

I should have clarified some things also. Smaller on the front is expected to reduce top speed but give you the low speed torque. One tooth smaller up front is approximately equal to 3 teeth LARGER on the rear. Going smaller on the front sprocket is expected to increase chain wear as the chain needs to flex more. But it's usually easy to change the front sprocket size by a tooth or two without needing a longer or shorter chain. Changing the rear sprocket size is more likely to need a different chain length. It is probably not exactly applicable to your KX, but see this thread for the KLX250 bikes:
