You have to slip the clutch a bit more if going slow off-road. The 14-39 definitely helps the big bore engine cruise at a lower rpm, but there is some sacrifice while riding in the dirt, but only at a slower pace. Yes you can keep the same chain for the 14-42 and 14-39, just have to move the rear wheel back about half way to full adjustment.
