Default Valve Shim Questions

1) Stock KLX250 and I will be attempting to check & potentially replacing some of the shims if it is out of specification from factory. This forum has been immensity helpful in getting prepared with tips and pointers along the way. Is all the original shims in the bike 3mm from factory?

2) Where is a good place to order individual shims? I'd like to avoid buying a whole kit if necessary especially since if I only need one or two to get it back within tolerance.

1 - Not quite clear what you're asking, but if it is asking if all shims are same from the factory, I doubt it. If you want to save money at the expense of a week, wait to place shim orders until you've checked clearance, figured out what size shim should be needed in all four valves. I've only bought two sizes from when I did my valves, The other two were swapped out or were good on size, I forget. But the point is you may have a correct size shim in another valve, saving the cost of that shim.

2 - I think I got shims on ebay, but might have been Amazon. I bought two or three packages, 2 to a package, if I remember right. Still far less cost than a shim kit with a bunch I'd never need. Look on ebay and Amazon to see how much they cost.

Thanks KLX678!

Yeah I ended up taking my valves off and checking just to be safe. Mine's got 18k miles on it and they're due for an inspection. Thankfully, I caught them in time and they're leaning towards out of spec (on the tight end).

The factory recommended specs are:
Intake: 0.10 - 0.19mm
Exhaust: 0.15-0.24mm

My measurements clearance measurements are:

intake: 0.12 and 0.11
exhaust: 0.16 and 0.17

shims on the bike (from factory):
intake: both 3.06
exhaust: both 2.95

I ordered my replacement shims on RockyMTVATV...they're $2 a piece! Love it! I got...

Two 3.00 (for the intake)
Two 2.90 (for the exhaust)

So that should put my back on towards the top end of allowable range spectrum!

Good deal. No sense in having a box of shim that will never be used when you only need a couple every twenty thousand miles.
