Default Uni Filter and Filter Cage/Support?

Hey guys I just got my Uni filter out of the package and it appears that the mounting hole is too small for the brass insert in the stock filter cage. I would imagine I need to use the cage but don't want to rip the filter to put it on. Anyone else find this or did you just not use the cage at all?

KLX300 Uni Filter? I don't remember having that problem... It was quite a stretch to get it over the cage, but I did it without ripping it.
This is the one I bought:
