Trouble with Clutch on 1987 KLR250

I am having trouble with the clutch slipping on engaging the new gear selected. I was wondering whether there was some way of manually adjusting the cable or something to rectify this problem. I have had this bike now for 23 years and the problem has just started happening. It seems to be worse taking off in 1st and slowly gets better as you go up the gears. I have started to not use the clutch at all after taking off and only using it to come back down the gears when slowing down. Does anyone have any ideas or do I have to take it to a dealer who will charge like a wounded bull to investiagte the problem??
cheers

If the cable has free play and the clutch still slips I'd say it's time to pull the cover and do an inspection. I wouldn't be surprised if the discs are shedding some friction material.

Is the oil motorcycle rated oil (ie: compatible with wet clutch)?

Good place to start. If it is moto rated then I would not be surprised to hear that the clutch is going. 23 years is a long time on a clutch unless you very rarely ride.
