Default Seat mod (gel pad)

Thought I'd post a quick write up on my gel pad mod...
I did it last night but haven't taken her for a long ride yet to evaluate the new cushiness...
It's still quite a firm seat (and narrow), but after sitting on it for 10 seconds or so, I can feel my *** bones sort of sinking in and getting molded around (the memory foam)... Should be good.

I also hated the half-gripper stock seat cover (liked the colors, hated the grip).
I wanted a smooth cover and black was the only good option I found...

That's a 3/4 inch gel pad covered with half inch KP3 memory foam (firm stuff).

Wrapped er up with some very soft, half inch smoothing foam.

And voila! I used 3M Super 77 spray adhesive to hold the various layers together.
And an electric turkey carving knife for the major cutting, and a sharp blade for the fine tuning...

Nice, you'll have to let us know if it cuts down on the dreaded monkey butt.

Nope I just can't do it, that's too easy[8D] OK maybe my pain pills are kicking in, I better go lay down now. My neck feels like its broke. Chiropractor in the morning and taking a couple of bikes to the shop and then heading over to Tacoma, I better get to bed. I love you guys..................yep just as I suspected the pills are starting to work.[8D]

Jason,

Very well done. I like the all black seat. I went for the black gripper, but I sort of wish I had gotten the smooth. I saw Sullydirt's down in Florida earlier this year and liked it a lot.

Hope it feels good.

I too have done some mods to my seat foam - without the greatest of success (kind of feels like sitting on a dead cat or something now).

One question - where does one find "gel"? Is that a home made approach, or did you buy some kind of gel pack specifically for this type of project?

I had been planning on attacking my lumpy seatissue with the sanding technique posted in a seperate seatthread - but adding some extra cushiness might be a good thing to do at the same time.

I got the Gel pad on eBay through this company:
http://stores.ebay.com/Kno-Place-Upholstery-Co

And they have instructions on their website how to install the pad "professionally":
http://www.knoplace.com/Gel_Pad_Installation.html

Well I guess the professional installation requires both knowledge and a little skill too, but at least they've given you the knowledge part. You're on your own for the rest.
