Well boys, the time has come for me to move on to a "stronger" dirt bike. I got back into dirt/road biking on the KLX, but I've found that I need a bike that has the beans for "real" off-road riding. I've been in umpteen situations where I wanted to loft the front wheel (water crossings, logs, wheelies, etc.), and the KLX just don't cut it. So, it's a KTM 400 EXC for me (street legal-ized) of course.

I know I'll get flamed for this post, but:

a) I don't want to pour money, time, and parts into the KLX and still have "marginal" power
b) I am -not- slamming the KLX; it is a great bike for what it is (a play bike).
c) hats off to the KLX for getting me back into riding.

sad but true also, KTM has nothing to offer that's street legal according to their site. If I were you I would be looking Husqvarna. All of their 4-stroke enduros 250cc and up are 50-state street legal. The TE250 is $6400 and if I were you, that's what I would be looking into. Or for like $700 more, the 450 could be had. Consider your options. KTM's are so overpriced, woohoo, you get White Power suspension. Big deal, we're not Larry Roeseler here. Personally, I like the looks of the KLX over any other optional bike. That, to me, is more important than how it performs stock (as that is easy to improve). Add a pipe, jetting, stiffen up the suspension (yes, alot of guys on this site complain about the soft susp., but they do not know a lick about adjusting it to be better). And if you really want some power, slap on a 300cc jug, bore that out even if you want, add a pumper carb and guaranteed you'd have a woods rocket. I bet you could do all of that for $1500 or so. Then you ask yourself, was the trade worth it? Good luck on your decision. I know there's nothing better than getting a new bike.
