RE: red grease on the air filter
Thats the grease that needs to be on the air filter. You can go buy this grease at any cycle shop. You take and wash the air filter, let it dry out, then spray it with that tacky red grease, that helps it catch a ton more dirt and anything else trying to get inside your engine.

RE: red grease on the air filter
Use a quality spray cleaner such asCleanup Degreaser from Maxima Racing Oils, then oil your filter with PJ1 or comparable and you are good to go. I try and put a little extra on the sealing edge of the filter for good measure. Oh, and the grease doesn't go just on the bottom, give it a good spray and squeeze out the excess. Then good luck getting the residual off your hands.:)

They are both great products. The cleaner is so amazing, it makes any grease, dirt or whatever disapear, and the oil is super tacky. ;) |
RE: red grease on the air filter
The grease at the bottom of the filter is different than the filter oil. It is a much thicker grease than the filter oil. It is used specifically to seal the filter to the air box. I use Silkolene pro RG2 grease on the bottom edge of the filter after I degrease, clean and apply oil. (three products used to clean the filter)

RE: red grease on the air filter
I check my air filter every few rides. If it looks dirty, than I clean it. It really depends on what type of riding you do and what mods you have. If you have your air box lid off and you ride all off road in a dusty environment, than you would probably want to clean it every other ride. The best way to tell if you need to clean it is to look at it.

Speaking of air filters, what is everyone using instead of stock?
